Each school year, between three and 10 percent of our students speak at language other than English at home. Our English Language Learner (ELL) classes support these students in learning the English language to the best of their ability.
In accordance with federal and state laws, SLLIS assesses and identifies those students with additional English instruction needs within the student’s first 30 days of school.
Those students who meet the federal guidelines for English Language Learners are assigned to small group English instruction during the school day. Each school year, students who are receiving services have two additional testing periods using the WIDA assessment to measure their growth in English language acquisition. As a student progresses, they will gradually end ELL services.
