Assessments

In addition to the formative and summative assessments that our grade teams design, we administer a series of standardized tests to our students.  Each assessment provides us with objective information about student skills and helps teachers to customize growth goals for each student, class, grade and school.

NWEA-Measures of Academic progress (MAP) for Primary Grades The NWEA-MAP for Primary Grades is a computer-based adaptive assessment designed by the Northwest Education Association.  This test is nationally norm-referenced which allows us to identify how SLLIS students perform in comparison to their peers nationally.  NWEA periodically realigns their normative scores; click here to view the 2008 normative data in grades K-11.  This assessment is aligned with Missouri Show-Me Standards and the Common Core Standards.

We administer the Reading and Math components of this test three times annually in grades K-2.  This test is administered entirely in English at all grade levels and helps teacher teams to monitor student growth in literacy skills in English.  Kindergarten students begin with the kindergarten skills checklist and upon mastery of the kindergarten reading and math skills, they progress to the adaptive test.  Beginning in 3rd grade, students transition to taking the NWEA-MAP.

Teacher teams use the test data to inform instructional groupings, to decide which concepts need to be re-taught and to individualize a student’s exposure to a specific skill or sub-skill.  Results from this assessment are used to determine participation in the Title I academic support program and the Accelerated Learner support program.

PALS español The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) español assessment is developed by the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.  This test is designed for students whose primary literacy instruction is delivered in Spanish.  Like the original PALS, this assessment addresses the sub-skills of phonological awareness and identifies the grade level of student literacy skills in Spanish.

The Spanish School is part of the pilot study at UVA to validate the scoring guide and grade-level placements before the assessment is available for widespread use.  This assessment is administered in-person with 1-2 students at a time.  During the pilot phase research assistants from UVA come to St. Louis twice per year and administer the test to students in grades K-2.  The instructional team from The Spanish School will be trained in this test administration.  Upon completion of the pilot our teachers will administer the tests directly to grades K-5.

This test is administered entirely in Spanish at all grade levels and helps teacher teams to monitor student growth in literacy skills in Spanish.  Results from this assessment are used to determine participation in the Title I academic support program and in the Accelerated Learner support program.

Missouri Assessment Program (MAP). The MAP is the required statewide assessment for students in grades 3-12.  At the elementary level the MAP assesses proficiency in Communication Arts, Math and Science (5th grade only).

In March 2012 SLLIS will administer the MAP to its first class of 3rd graders.  SLLIS will receive MAP scores in July 2012 and will publish the composite test score data in August 2012.   Parents will receive individual student results in the fall of 2012.  Results from the MAP are required to determine participation in the Title I academic support program and may be used to determine eligibility in the Accelerated Learner support program.
